Help the Kelp

 

Coastal kelp forests are some of the most fertile feeding and breeding grounds for fish and invertebrates globally, but they are disappearing four times faster than rainforests*. Reducing urchin populations can help restore kelp growth—up to 18” per day!

Kelp forests and other shallow water vegetation make up the majority of the ocean’s vegetated habitats but only equal 0.05% of the plant biomass on land, however they convert almost as much CO2 as terrestrial vegetation.

Job Creation

The removal of empty, barren urchins also creates new jobs at our land and sea-based ranches. Combined with this, the return of fish to once urchin dominated, desert-like waters entails renewed economic activity in rural, coastal communities.

More than half of the oxygen you breathe comes from marine photosynthesizers, like phytoplankton and seaweed. Both use carbon dioxide, water and energy from the sun to make food for themselves, releasing oxygen in the process.
